Final Project

I had a clear vision for this piece from the beginning. I wanted to continue the trend of teeth and mouths. I wanted to put it on top of a Bob Ross style background so that the dark theme of the bones and teeth would contrast with the peaceful setting. Then I added the cutesy wallpaper to add more contrast, but this time color wise. The background was the most fun to do actually. I want to do more pieces like this, but I want to try different painting techniques and different backgrounds.

Line Project (Fifth)

This was just a fun drawing where I was trying to get practice for different shading techniques and it became a full-fledged piece.

Line Project (Fourth)

When I began this piece I really had no idea what I was trying to create. I just let things happen naturally as they came to my mind. I used to a calligraphy pen to splatter ink pools all over the page and draggedd the tip of it in each one to create these tail like things. I tried leaving the background white to create a positive field and contrast sharply with the blotches to make them stand out more. I ended with a cool piece I think. They look a bit like small plankton floating in the see to me, or maybe small fairies with their lights dragging behind them as they glide around. Either way I liked the effect.

Line Project (Third)

This piece was just complete experimentation for me. I stuck with the theme of monsters and creepy-ness. I wanted to draw an eye, which is another simple object you can draw, but have a lot of creative fun with and be detailed with. I tried to create weighted lines with a calligraphy pen. It didn't translate as well as I wanted, but like I said this was all for experimentation and fun so I ended trying to add some stuff to make up what I felt it was lacking. I wound up using watercolors to add some pop to the piece, another first for me. (This piece was a few firsts for me.) I just kind of went crazy with the different colors to see what other colors and patterns I could create. In the end the piece was almost completely different than what I had in mind in the beginning, but I still enjoy it.

Line Project (Second)

This piece was actually one of the first ones that became kind of the main concept I would end up focusing on through out this course. I ended finding out that I really enjoying creepy creatures and creepy mouths. They're just a lot of a fun and something you can be very creative and detailed with. I tried using somewhat of a scribble, sketchy line for this piece. I think it ended up helping add to the creepiness of it. I feel like it suited it well. I was also able to have fun with the colors and hope I can do more pieces like it in the future.

Change Project

I struggled with what I wanted to do this project over for a while. I had a plan originally, but I wasn't really in love with it. I remembered that I really enjoying creepy teeth and monsters and remembered a sketch practice I had seen from another artists on Twitter. They had drawn all sorts of different mouths and expressions, just for practice. That inspired me to do this project over the change of expression, but using a creepy monster mouth as the subject. I used a piece of cardboard with four faces to help show the transition of a neutral(ish) expression to one of rage. Originally I also wanted to use different colors in the gums to further emphasize the transition of emotion, but the canvas didn't work well with my colors.

I had to paint over the cardboard at least 10 times just to get it white enough for me to work on. Then I had to draw each mouth at least four different times because the canvas was such a struggle to work with. The pencil and ink smeared like nothing I've had to deal with before. It took a lot of erasing and re-tracing to finally get each section to a place I was happy with. This whole piece was a struggle. I used angles and depth I've never had to work with before and used a level of detail that I usually get too tired with half way through a piece. I normally never finish pieces like this. In the end I learned a lot and feel like I gained a lot of experience creating this and grew a little as artist. For me, this is my best work.

Line Project (First)

For this piece I had a few different ideas going through my brain, but the things that stuck were triangles, my favorite shape, and planets. For someone reason I really wanted to color a planet and attempt to draw an asteroid belt. I ended up with a triangle portal to another universe, opening up in front of a planet and its asteroid belt stretching out into the other side of the portal. This is really just doodle line with my attempt at a little bit of pointilism. The whole thing was actually pretty fun to create.
